Frequently Asked Questions
Jangl Basics
What is Jangl?
Jangl gives you the ability to call or text anyone you know online, using the phone you already have. Simply tell us who you want to call and we'll give you a Jangl number to call them.
Jangl works from any phone, with no download, data plan, or computer required. If you can dial a phone number, you can call anyone with Jangl - even someone who has never used Jangl! Jangl protects your privacy.
To use Jangl, all you need to know is their email address - you never need their real phone number, and they'll never see yours.
How does Jangl work?
Simply tell us the email address of the person you want to call or text, and we'll give you a Jangl number to call them.
When you call someone's Jangl number, one of two things will happen:
- You can leave them a voice message, which we send to them by email.
- If they have allowed it, your call will be forward to their phone and you can talk live.
When you send a text message to someone's Jangl number:
- We send them an email notification with your text message. We also send the text message to their Jangl inbox where they can reply to that message right from the web!
- If they have agreed to accept text messages on their phone, we'll send the message to their phone.
- If the recipient is outside the US, they will not recieve your message on their phone, but they'll get a notification via email and your message in their Jangl inbox.
Currently, we only support sending messages from and to phones in the US.
How do you know everyone's phone numbers?
We don't! To get a Jangl number you tell us who you want to call. If that person is not using Jangl, we let you leave a voice message and we'll simply send your message to the email address you gave us.
How is Jangl different from other anonymous phone service providers?
Privacy and Anonymity:
Jangl assigns a unique local phone number to each person in a Jangl connection. You would treat a Jangl number like you would any other number: you can screen calls with caller ID, add the number to your mobile phone contacts, and use all of the features of your mobile phone, such as assigning personal ring tones, returning calls from the received calls list, and more. Because a Jangl number is unique to a relationship, your Jangl numbers cannot be used by anyone except the people you have established connections with. This prevents unsolicited calls to your phone.
Call Anyone:
Jangl lets you contact anyone, anywhere, right now. To contact someone, you simply enter an email address into the web form on the homepage, and Jangl will provide you with a number to call and leave a message for that person. Jangl then takes that message and delivers it to the intended recipient with a phone number (not your real number) to call you back. With Jangl, all you need is an email address to make contact and start talking now.
How much does Jangl cost?
During the Jangl beta period, the service is free. As we listen to your feedback and release new versions of the service, we may eventually reach a point where we decide to release all or parts of our service for a nominal fee.
Can anyone call me using Jangl?
Anyone who knows your email address can call and leave you a voice message that Jangl sends to your email - just as they could send you an email at any time.
At first, though, they can only leave you voice message. It's up to you whether they can keep calling you and whether their calls will ever ring your phone.
You can delete or block them, or add them as a contact and call them back. With Jangl you have an unprecedented level of control over your phone communications.
What is a 'CallMe Link'?
CallMe Links provide a simple way for you to let people call you without posting your phone number. Just add your own email address to the end of our call me link:
http://callme.jangl.com/me@myemail.com
and post the link anywhere you want - in your profile, blog, blog comment, email, email signature, auction listing, etc. Anyone can click it and use Jangl to get a number to call you - safely, privately, and keeping you in control.
Jangl Calling and Jangl Numbers
What is a Jangl Number?
A Jangl number is a "virtual number" that's not a real number, but works the same way for placing and receiving calls. To contact someone, dial or text their Jangl number. When they call or text, you'll see their Jangl number in caller ID. You can even add it to your phone contacts.
Jangl numbers also give you online access to your voice and text messages. You can block the number at any time, and they can never contact you again - not from a different phone, not ever.
Jangl numbers are always local - even if the other person is half way around the world. You can call and choose to leave a voice message before their phone even rings. And we are working hard to make them do even more.
Can I end a Jangl relationship?
Of course, and you have two options available.
“Blocking” a Jangl contact means your shared number with that person is disabled. When calling your shared Jangl number, a blocked contact will only hear that the number is not currently in service. The blocked Jangl contact is also removed from your contacts.
"Deleting" deletes the contact and the Jangl number so that person won't be able to use that number. However, that person can re-establish a Jangl connection with you again.
How do calls show up on a phone bill
when I make or get calls with Jangl numbers?
Your real phone number and the real phone numbers of the people you connect with using Jangl are never revealed on a phone bill. If you use a Jangl number to call other people, your itemized phone bill would show the Jangl number that you dialed. Likewise, if someone uses a Jangl number to call you, your phone bill would show that you received a call from that Jangl number.
Does anyone ever see my real phone number?
Absolutely not. When you call or text someone using a Jangl number, only the Jangl number is displayed in the other person's Caller ID. Your personal phone number will never be revealed.
Furthermore, at Jangl, we are tirelessly committed to protecting the privacy of our users, and have taken great steps to ensure that your information is protected and to eliminate any chance of fraud. We have put in place appropriate physical, electronic, and managerial procedures to safeguard and secure the information we collect.
Please read our privacy policy for more information.
What happens when I answer a call from a Jangl number?
When someone places a call to you using a Jangl number, the caller is placed on hold for a few moments while we route the call to your phone. When you answer, a voice prompt let's you know you have an incoming call from Jangl. You can then press 1 to accept the call, or press 2 to decline the call.
If you press 1 to accept the call, its time to start talking!
If you press 2 to decline the call, the caller is asked to leave a voice message. We then send that voice message to your inbox on the website.
Voice Messages
What happens if I don't answer the phone? Can the Caller leave me a message?
Jangl provides you with voicemail. Really, really accessible voicemail. You can access your voice messages through a URL or a phone number, receive email or sms notifications of voice messages, listen to your voice messages in your inbox website as well as all the other standard dialing options.

Widget
Jangl Me Widget

Service Requirements
Can I use Jangl with my business phone or my VoIP phone?
You can use Jangl with these types of phones as long as the outbound Caller ID matches the number of your phone. Unfortunately, this means that if your company uses a single corporate number with multiple extensions (geeks call this a “PBX”), you will not be able to use your business phone with Jangl. VoIP phones displaying a different outbound Caller ID will also not work.
What do I need to get started?
All you need is a telephone with outbound Caller ID enabled, and, of course, someone you want to contact. Self-Janglers are welcome too - no judgements.
Do I need Caller ID enabled at all times to use Jangl?
No. Your outbound Caller ID does not have to be enabled at all times. Outbound Caller ID is necessary any time you dial or text a Jangl phone number. You do not need to have Caller ID enabled to receive calls or text messages from other people. Having inbound Caller ID (the ability for you to see the phone numbers of people who call you) does not matter at any time.
Registration
Why does Jangl need my personal phone number?
If you register in order to get a Jangl number to call someone, we ask for your phone number so that we can verify the delivery of Jangl calls and text messages.
At no point do we disclose your phone number to anyone. To see more
information on privacy, please read our privacy policy.
Why do I need to activate my phone?
We ask that you activate your phone if you want calls and text messages from other Jangl users to be routed directly to your phone. For security and privacy reasons, we want to ensure that the number you entered as your own, is - in fact - your own. At no point do we disclose your phone number to anyone. To see more
information on privacy, please read our privacy policy.
